Rasmussen encephalitis: Response to early immunotherapy in a case of immune-mediated encephalitis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background. Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a severe immune-mediated neurologic disease characterized by unihemispheric inflammation, progressive neurologic deficits, and intractable focal epilepsy. Functional hemispherectomy is considered to be the only effective intervention for this devastating disease. Reports on immunotherapy use in RE, including steroids, IV immunoglobulin, and tacrolimus, have been published. These therapies may lead to “arrest” of the disease in patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy in whom motor function is not impaired enough to be offered a functional hemispherectomy. Information regarding the effect of early and aggressive immunotherapy on cognitive function, MRI disease activity, and seizure control in this population is limited. Here we present a case of a child satisfying 2005 Bien diagnostic criteria for RE in whom disease control and motor and cognitive preservation was achieved using early aggressive immunotherapy.

Anti N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDR) encephalitis has been recognized as the most frequent autoimmune encephalitis in children after acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM).However due to the variable the variable clinical presentation, the paucity of specific finding on standard laboratory and radiological investigation remains under recognized. First discribed in 2005, most commonly...

Background Anti-N-methyl- d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is an autoimmune neurological disorder that usually occurs as a paraneoplastic syndrome and is particularly associated with ovarian teratoma. Standard therapy for severe cases is not established and the prognosis in patients who do not respond to first-line treatment is poor. Case Report An 11-year-old boy complained ps...

AE is a serious medical condition in which the immune system attacks the brain, impairing function. With rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many patients recover most or all functions. However, not all patients experience full recovery; with approximately 6% mortality and other patients who never regain significant brain and/or bodily functions. Autoimmune encephalitis can pro...

Background: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis is the most common cause of sporadic encephalitis, with significant morbidity and mortality that are effectively reduced by antiviral treatment. Herpes simplex infection in pregnant women rarely results in encephalitis. The most common symptoms of a pregnant woman with herpes simplex infection are colds and skin vesicles. Herpetic encephalitis...
متن کاملTwo limbic encephalitis cases with potassium channel antibodies
Background: Autoimmune limbic encephalitis is presented with the involvement of limbic structures. It is a diff erent entity rather than a component of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. In recent years, limbic encephalitis cases with immune-mediated voltage gated potassium channel antibody that respond to immunotherapies have been described. Case reports: We present two male patients aged 45 ...
